Creativity has many expressions – for me right now its mainly photographic. Hold on to your hats though – there will be many more galleries to come soon.

in the mean time, please take some time to look, and look again at some of my work.

Laslappie Community (Laslappie is Afrikaans for patchwork)<br /><span style="font-size:0.8em;">What is a city without its streets? They give rise to neighbourhoods, to life, to memories, to cultural identities and sometimes to movements. And yet, while city streets are in a real sense the canvas on which urbanites live out their lives, very seldom are they the subject - the object of art.<br /> <br />We think it’s high time we gave the tar, pavements, dives, clubs, coffee shops, corner stores, characters, signage, landmarks and hole-in-wall boutiques an opportunity to be in the spotlight.<br /> <br />Street is an exhibition, a homage, a tribute by some of Cape Town’s vanguard artists and ordinary people to the streets of Cape Town.<br /> <br />For many tourists and locals alike, their memory of Bokaap is epitomized by the colorful houses of Chiapini Street. In my experience, the architecture and colours are also a fair representation of the people of the Bo-Kaap, most notably pertaining to cultural structures and norms. People are often seen walking to neighbors to borrow an egg or lend a cup of sugar. Everyone seems to know one another and are part of each other's daily lives. <br />I've found Cape Town to be a place where one needs to make an appointment to visit a friend. This is very definitely not the case in Bo-Kaap - no Appointment needed, just ring the doorbell! <br /><br />The brightly colored houses are reminiscent of the bold outward expression of culture and emotion, much like the "Kaapse Klopse" (minstrels) that also originate from this area. I cant help but wonder if the houses inside are as colorful as the exteriors, if the private lives of the people are as jovial as their quick smiles would lead me to believe. Furthermore, these houses and their people prompt me to consider the degree to which we all separate our public lives from our private lives.<br /><br />This is no doubt a closely knit community and houses built right next each other, permanently "touching sides".<br /><br />This artwork consists of various abstracted photographic compositions of architectural details. Ive chosen to include two different houses, textures or colours per image to show how people live outside the confines of their own houses to the extent of living well into each other's comfort zones. All the images together contribute to a greater societal patchwork quilt ("laspappie") and as the images relate to their "neighbours" with line or colour.<br />The boundaries of houses were deliberately moved away from the boundaries of the photographs - it would have been easy to capture each house as a separate and individual detail, but instead, this artwork celebrates the strong sense of an interwoven community that is evident in Chiapini Street.<br /><br />In an increasingly self-centered introspective world, the art of community is slowly being lost behind high walls and electric fences of modern houses. Without them even knowing it, the people of Bo-Kaap and indeed Chiapini Street have inspired me to reach out and meet my own neighbours, to build into my own community so that we might serve one another and that our lives lived out in community might be saturated and joyously colorful. <br /> <br />This work forms part of a collaborative exhibition named STREET: <br />Launching 17th May, 6pm til late<br />then 18th – 20th May, 12pm til late<br />St Stephens (above &Union)<br />Riebeeck Square, Bree Street<br />Free entry.</span> • <a style="font-size:0.8em;" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/72377353@N00/5728776686/" target="_blank">View on Flickr</a>

Llundudno alien ship<br /><span style="font-size:0.8em;">most amazing sunset and cloud on a shoot wiht some flickr friends. had a great time getting out, but MAN i got frstrated as I know I could do better creatively. Rainbow around the moon.<br /><span style="font-size:0.8em;">this must be one of the rarest things to be seen ever. ive seen many a circle around the moon, but none that had such a pronounced colourfull rainbow. this was indeed super sweet. it kept changing in density and in luminosity. the colours in the rainbow were not visible for very long either. so we dont have those funky northern lights, but i think this beats it!</span> • <a style="font-size:0.8em;" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/72377353@N00/4728280009/" target="_blank">View on Flickr</a>

Music and limericks<br /><span style="font-size:0.8em;">There once was a jeweler from Cape Town,<br />who uhmed and ahed with a big frown.<br />I offered to shoot <br />her treasure and loot<br />that could have been part of a crown.<br /><br />Actually this was a piece designed for a musician who sings in a philharmonic choir if i'm not mistaken. The brief was that it would stand out on the black clothes that the performers wear when on stage.<br /><br />Anyway, my client Kim Cloete, is very talented at using line, form and texture to make unique designs that keep her customers coming back. this is one of the shots for her new website that is being put together as i type. Love is in the air<br /><span style="font-size:0.8em;">I was privileged to be a guest at a friend's wedding at the end of last year. my camera was invited as well, but i was not the big chief of picturetakingness. Fun in the sun #4<br /><span style="font-size:0.8em;">Pretty tricky this shot in the late afternoon on a beach with no trees, rocky overhangs or anything. so i chose to use what i had - lots of sunlight. <br />i ended up jacking up the white balance to warm everything up and give it a slightly treated look (not sure it this is the happiness tho), underexposed the sunlight a little and dropped in some stobe light form the right for some three dimentionality.<br />I balanced on one foot, gripping a golden reflector between my chin and foot.<br />the tricky bit was to work cleverly with the hard shadows to tame them.<br /><br />...no photoshopping - this one is straight out of the camera.</span> • <a style="font-size:0.8em;" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/72377353@N00/4185963404/" target="_blank">View on Flickr</a>

Nissan GT-R (Own it)<br /><span style="font-size:0.8em;">WOW! what a day. i'm still buzzing.<br />to be honest, i had NO idea of what this car (? or monster of beast or warmashine, tarmacmuncher...) is capable of. i actually didnt even have a good odea of what it would look like up close and personal. well, its just blew all of my expectations out of the water. and i had some pretty high expectations. Abstract selfportrait<br /><span style="font-size:0.8em;">ok this is a little freaky, but bear with me.<br />firstly - NO photochopping was done to the shot. (my term for image manipulation in photoshop)<br /><br />if you look carefully, the girl is holding a photograph (with white sides) and the photo is a close-up of a cat's eye. so i posiotioned myself so the cat's eye would line up to about where her eye would be. <br /><br />now the hectic part is that I reflected in the cat's eye when i shot it, and now i'm photographing all of that without being reflected. <br /><br />its like Ripleys - you can decide if you believe it, but its true ;)<br /><br /></span> • <a style="font-size:0.8em;" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/72377353@N00/3010004346/" target="_blank">View on Flickr</a>

Pre-sunrise magic<br /><span style="font-size:0.8em;">This sort of shot is why i flog myself out of bed early in the morning. and i kid you not - only minutes after this one (thus about three more exposures) everything changed because some direct light hit the mountains and exposure times plummeted rapidly.<br /><br />i didn't do anything strange or artificial to the colours - i shot on daylight WB the exaggerate the differences in all the different light sources' colour temp. sweet effect in the end.</span> • <a style="font-size:0.8em;" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/72377353@N00/2926533204/" target="_blank">View on Flickr</a>

VW Scirocco R & Golf GTi R: standoff landscape<br /><span style="font-size:0.8em;">It comes down to a couple of simple points for me - the practicality and logic of the 4wd Golf with 4 doors vs the more thrilling performance of the frontwheel drive Scirocco. eventhough the cars have identical engine specs, the Scirocco comes accross as more explosive because its lighter. It will however NOT be as good a long distance tourer as the Golf. (i could be horibly wrong here) Suprizingly the Golf is quite a bit more pricey here in SA. A really cool optical illusion is the aparent differing sizes of the rear wheels - they are all 19" alloys, but in my opinion, the pretty lines of the Scirocco with its sloping roofline and lifting window line along with the bulge of the wider wheel arch, the rea wheel looks bigger and more intensional on the Scirocco.</span> • <a style="font-size:0.8em;" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/72377353@N00/5908317477/" target="_blank">View on Flickr</a>
